Ranking the Worst to Best Class Stories in Star Wars: The Old Republic
Star Wars: The Old Republic celebrated its 10 year anniversary and I set out a goal to finally achieve the Legendary Status and earn my Legendary Player title. I played this MMO at launch and fell in love with it. Though I've taken my many breaks throughout the years, I always loved this game.
I've never been the type of MMO player to have multiple alt characters, so Legendary was always a pipe dream for me, but considering the game is entering it's tenth year, I just had to earn it and I finally did. Now that I've achieved Legendary status I believe I can have a valid opinion on which of the class stories are the most entertaining and which are a drag. Here's my rankings from worst to best on which class stories are the most entertaining. I'm going to try my best to avoid spoilers but I'm not going to promise that nothing will be spoiled.
I'm only ranking these classes at face value, not how they perform in the expansions. It's not really fair considering the expansion's stories were designed with force users in mind.
8. Jedi Consular
Shadow/Sage
Every one of the class stories in Star Wars: The Old Republic are amazing, even the worst of them, so if your favorite class story ranks low on my list just know that this is my opinion and they are all great. Some are just more entertaining than others. SWTOR class stories are like Pokémon, each one of them is someone's favorite so there is no pleasing everyone with this list.
The Jedi Consular story is a very interesting story, It has some of the most call backs to the Knights of the Old Republic games. Hell, you get to "meet" Bastila Shan. However interesting the story, its not very exciting. You get to learn more about the nature of the force and uncover a mystery that is plaguing multiple Jedi masters around the galaxy. If a more spiritual and knowledge based adventure is up your alley than this is the perfect class story to choose. The class companions are interesting, none of them really stand out to me however.
Nadia Grell seemed like the most interesting and the one with the best backstory and Qyzen Fess was an awesome addition with an interesting backstory as well. However the rest of them, I could pretty much live without.
7. Smuggler
Scoundrel/Gunslinger
I'll be completely honest here, This was my last class story and I powered through it during a double experience week. With both of those things considered you can safely assume that had an effect of where this class story ranks.
The Smuggler is your typical Han Solo adventure, you even get a Wookie companion fairly early, I personally loved this class story. This story had great moments but the actual plot is among the weakest part. I get that there has to be some type of structure to the story but It seems like toward the end you're forced to align with the Republic (at least that's how it seemed to me). The antagonists are one of the weakest parts of the story. I know some people loved Skavak but I personally didn't really like him as a character. Our character's only motivation for hunting him down are he stole our ship? It just didn't click with me for some reason.
The companions were one of the strongest parts of the story, I personally loved Bowdaar for his little comments during story missions and how it would affect dialog. You get to play the Han Solo class with a Wookie, I mean come on what else do I have to say? Risha was the strongest companion for story reasons. I loved how each of the little trinkets in the ship actually hinted toward a future mission.
6. Bounty Hunter
Powertech/Mercenary
The Bounty Hunter class story I feel was the most disappointing to me, but maybe that's because this story was written years and years before The Mandalorian's mainstream success. It checks all the boxes for what should happen in a bounty hunter storyline. You've got winning the great hunt, you're fair share of bounty hunting, becoming a mandalorian, and an awesome ending bounty. However it just didn't deliver as well as it should have.
The companions are good, I personally really liked Mako however I see how a lot of the dark side bounty hunter players would have hater her constant nagging at every dark side choice you made. Blizz is adorable, Gault was great, Torian is a fan favorite however I didn't like him all that much.
I think the best part of the story is that you get to be the Boba Fett type character, the voice acting for the Male character is amazing. Everything else is pretty decent, but again all of the class stories are great in their own ways. I just had higher hopes for this one.
5. Sith Inquisitor
Assassin/Sorcerer
The Sith Inquisitor storyline was good, I just feel like it gets a little dry with the repetitive "Go to this planet, absorb this ghost, rinse, and repeat.". The voice acting for the female inquisitor was very good. I loved scouring the galaxy as a witchy sith lord, electrocuting people for seemingly no reason. This was definitely the class that seemed the most psychotic when playing a dark side playthrough.
The companions were okay, probably one of the weakest aspects of this storyline. I really liked Andronikos, Xalek was really good however I feel like it isn't until late when you get him. Khem Val is a lot of people's favorite however I didn't like him all that much. The true worst part of this storyline was how slow it is after the first chapter. However I loved some of the side character such as Darth Zash and the final encounter with Darth Thanaton.
I had a lot of fun playing The Inquisitor story, the parts that are exciting definitely outweigh the parts that are slow.
4. Trooper
Vanguard/Commando
This was my first class story I ever played in Star Wars: The Old Republic way back when the game launched. I am the most nostalgic for this class story so I have a VERY hard time ranking it any lower than this.
The Trooper class story has in my opinion the strongest first chapter of any of the class stories. Having your entire squad defect and taking down your old squad while building a new one was awesome. I really wish they would have made Tavus the final boss of the entire story instead of finishing that story arc so early. After the first chapter, it just felt like you trying to recruit new squad members instead of a true story. Definitely one of the most boring stories following the first chapter. The voice acting is amazing either gender you pick because you either get Fem Shepard from Mass Effect or Captain America.
The companions are my favorite from this class, obviously because I am nostalgic for them. Elara Dorne I feel is the best romance in the entire game. Aric Jorgan is one of the best companions and I hear from people who play a female trooper that he also has a great romance. M1-4X is pretty cool, however Yuun and Tanno Vik I can definitely live without.
3. Jedi Knight
Guardian/Sentinel
The Jedi Knight is one of the best stories in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Whenever someone is new to the game and they are asking me which of the class stories should they start with, I always recommend one of the top three on this list. The Jedi Knight class story acts like a true sequel to Knights of the Old Republic games.
This story is your typical Jedi storyline. You start as a Padawan, complete your trials, become a knight of the republic, and conquer evil across the galaxy. I personally have never been a fan of the cliché hero's journey, but if you are it is a very well done story. It has the best final chapter in the entire game and it's the one class story that makes the most sense for the expansions.
The companions are some of the most iconic from SWTOR. Kira is a fan favorite companion and romance. Lord Scourge is amazing and T7-O1 is amazing. I feel like the weakest companions for the Jedi Knight aren't even all that boring. They are just relatively outshined by the amazing companions.
2. Sith Warrior
Marauder/Juggernaut
The Sith Warrior is amazing, simply put. Everything from the voice acting, to the companion and the story is top tier. The story never seems to get slow or boring. You get to play your own version of Darth Malgus and I cant talk about how much fun it is. It gets to feel like a sequel to Knights of the Old Republic without being the generic jedi knight story.
The companions are really good and each have their own stories that mesh with yours. Vette is an all time great companion and the best romance option for someone trying to mirror a Malgus story. Jaesa is a great companion and even has two completely different versions depending on which side of the force you align with (I still have nightmares thinking about DS Jaesa). Some people find Quinn a little annoying, myself included, however he is also beloved by some and has an amazing story moment late in the storyline that I will not spoil. Pierce is interesting however I never really liked him all that much and Broonmark is very forgettable.
There's betrayal, revenge, and even love if you'd like there to be. Some classes suffer from the inability to play either dark side or light side without seeming weird or out of place. However this class story both versions make sense and work.
1. Imperial Agent
Operative/Sniper
The Imperial Agent is by far the best storyline in SWTOR. Sure, it isn't a force user and isn't truly a sequel to KOTOR but it never was supposed to be. Not only is it the best class story in this game but it is one of the best stories BioWare has ever made.
This storyline has multiple unique ending all with subtle differences. This is the only storyline (to my knowledge) with a dark side, light side, and neutral ending. There are different factions you can align with (or pretend to align with) and you get to be a true secret agent (or double agent). Please also don't get me started on how awesome the starship is! This is the storyline I will always recommend for someone who doesn't want to be a force user.
The companions are honestly the weakest part of the story but I don't think I really let that affect the overall experience of how awesome this class story is. Kaliyo is a pretty good companion however I always found her a bit annoying. Some people LOVE Vector however I always thought he was a little weird personally, to each their own. Scorpio I always felt was a little boring during the class story but ends up playing a huge role in the expansions. I really liked Ensign Temple and I could live without Doctor Lokin.
If you've never played Star Wars: The Old Republic and you're trying to get the best class story, Imperial Agent in my opinion is the best. I am going to reiterate, each one of these stories is amazing in their own way and in the end you should pick the class that seems the most interesting to you.
Let me know below what you thought the best of the class stories was? Did I get it right?
Which of the class stories in SWTOR is best overall?

Smuggler
